Shadrach Fellowship Spotlight: Nana Asantewa Afadzinu (PhD)

In this edition of the Shadrach Fellowship Spotlight by The HuD Group, we feature Nana Asantewa Afadzinu (PhD), a dedicated fellow whose passion, leadership, and commitment to civil society and sustainable development continue to inspire. As an active member of the Shadrach Fellowship, Nana brings her wealth of experience and influence to enrich our collective journey.

As a Shadrach Fellowship member, Nana Afadzinu has been present in nearly every fellowship activity—spiritual formation, leadership training, and mentoring—contributing her wisdom and learning spirit to our collective journey. Her humility, despite her towering professional achievements, has modelled authentic leadership and encouraged her fellow Shadrachs to pursue growth with purpose.

Professional Journey and Leadership Impact

Nana Afadzinu, Executive Director of the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), has worked with and within the civil society sector for over 27 years.

She is a passionate advocate for sustainable development in Africa, emphasising the full participation of an effective, efficient, influential, and sustainable civil society. Her passion for leading change and challenging the status quo on the continent landed her a place on the Avance Media 2020 100 Most Influential African Women List.

A lawyer by profession, Nana has worked extensively in governance, human rights, philanthropy, and capacity development with several mission-oriented organisations in Africa, including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), and IBIS West Africa.

Nana has also served on several public service, corporate, and non-profit boards, including the AfDB-CSO Committee, the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR), YALI West Africa, and the Star Ghana Foundation Board. She is a Trustee of OXFAM Great Britain and one of the co-deputy chairpersons, a board member of Resource Alliance, and a member of the University of Ghana School of Law Management Committee.

She is an alumna of the University of Ghana, Faculty of Law; the Ghana School of Law; Columbia University Human Rights Advocates Program; and the New York University School of Law. Nana also holds a PhD in African Philanthropy from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University), Johannesburg.

Beyond her professional achievements, Nana is married and blessed with two sons.

The Shadrach Fellowship

At The Shadrach Fellowship 5, Nana Afadzinu’s presence has been invaluable. She exemplifies what it means to strike a balance between professional excellence and spiritual depth. Her reflections during fellowship sessions, her active participation in retreats, and her encouragement to peers have greatly enriched our community.

She is a shining example of how faith, purpose, and leadership intersect to bring about impact not only in one’s personal journey but across nations.

We celebrate Nana Asantewa Afadzinu in the Shadrach Fellowship Spotlight as a model of service and influence, and a true embodiment of a rooted, flourishing, and fruitful life.
